BBB Event Offers Free Identity Theft Protection Guidelines and On-Site Document Shredding
BBB invites community to take part in a coast-to-coast “Secure Your ID” Day
Your Better Business Bureau (BBB) and its major sponsors the Borough of Pleasant Hills, First Commonwealth and Business Records Management invite communities in Allegheny and other local counties to BBB "Secure Your ID" Day Saturday, April 26, 2014 in the parking lot of the Pleasant Hills Municipal Building (410 E. Bruceton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236).
Residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the April 26th event and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of sensitive documents. BBB staff will be on-site to guide cars through a moving line, offload disposable items and shred them on the spot. Free goodie bags containing educational advice and tips for identity theft protection will also be distributed to attendees.
“Being that identity theft is largely a crime of access, BBB’s goal is to make sensitive information less accessible and empower people to be their own first line of defense against fraud,” says Warren King, President of the Better Business Bureau of Western PA. “By collaborating with community-based BBBs across North America, we’ll have a tremendous coast-to-coast presence that will reach a lot of people and hopefully, prevent a lot of theft.”
According to Javelin Strategy and Research, identity fraud incidents increased by over one million victims and fraudsters stole more than $21 billion in 2012. In addition, the study found 12.6 million victims of identity fraud in the United States in the past year, which equates to one victim every three seconds.
Bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be shredded and take home the tips and resources you need to help protect yourself. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders.
