Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – May 10, 2013 – A new phone scam is making its rounds and targeting local senior citizens and senior caregivers. BBB has received reports of consumers being contacted by aggressive telemarketing calls claiming to be from Philips Lifeline or simply, “Medical Alert.”

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – April 17, 2013 - At least one poorly-conceived charity scam has already emerged in the wake of the explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, and more are likely. BBB Wise Giving Alliance (“Alliance”), the national charity monitoring arm of the Better Business Bureau, and BBB Serving Eastern Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont (“BBB Boston”) cautions donors about potential red flags concerning tragedy-related philanthropy.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – March 4, 2013 – In a recent study conducted by the Federal Trade Commission, it was found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their three major credit reports. In addition, one in four of these consumers were able to identify errors that might affect their overall credit scores. As a result of this study, the Better Business Bureau is urging consumers to check their credit reports on a regular basis for potential errors to avoid putting their pocketbooks and financial health at risk.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – October 29, 2012 – As Hurricane Sandy approaches our region, your Better Business Bureau urges Pennsylvanians to prepare for all possible effects from the potentially dangerous “super storm.” According to local meteorologists, the largest threat to Pennsylvanians will come from high sustained winds of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. Pennsylvania is also expected to receive 2.5-3.5 inches of rain, potentially causing flooding and creating road hazards.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – October 25, 2012 - The BBB name and logo are being fraudulently used by criminals in an on-going phishing scam. The emails look very much like notice of a complaint from BBB, but contain links to malware that can infect your computer, steal passwords, etc. BBB is working with law enforcement, as well as with a private deactivation firm (at our own expense), to shut down as many criminal websites as possible. To date, we have shut down well over 100 sites.
